How did Trainer Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) helped me in connecting the dots?Connecting The Dots reminds me of the Steve Jobs' Convocation Speech in Stanford made on 12th June 2005 & today I realized what he meant by saying that you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart, even when it leads you off the well worn path and that will make all the difference.
The beginning of Web 2.0 saw The Birth of Netscape Internet Services on 8th Jan 2004. I was a part of Pilot Team of 15 Members at the back end; which successfully created the market for Netscape Internet Service. We made this Beta Test Process a success and that is how Netscape Online could launch its Software as a full fledged Internet Service Provider in the market.
The idea was to establish control over standards for displaying content and applications in the browser would, in theory, give Netscape the kind of market power enjoyed by Microsoft in the PC market. In short, Netscape focused on creating software, updating it on occasion, and distributing it to the end users.
A search engine was once a part of The Webtop in Netscape Internet Services. The web is used as platform & was designed to replace the desktop where information updates and applets pushed by information providers who would purchase Netscape servers. The information was however limited and certain information was available with specific search engines.
Google brought a sea change in the Web by bringing user-generated content to offer Web search based on reputation through its "Page Rank" algorithm. Unlike software, which undergoes scheduled releases, such services are constantly updated by a process called "the perpetual beta". It is indeed a historic move and the genesis of how Web 2.0 tools have emerged today.
I saw a notification with the title, India's First and ONLY MOOC on Training on March 26, 2012. I turned to Wikipedia to look for more information & bingo I was right. A MOOC is in contrast to traditional courses, where the content is prepared ahead of time & the kind of learning I had till date was more or less preset.
I want to share a real life experience of an environment which suggests that the usage of Web 2.0 tools exists. Learners from different discipline of work have meaningfully contributed. However, this amazing Web 2.0 tool is simply being referred as a source of update and not as a full fledged learning base; which is something more of a Webtop where information updates and applets pushed by information provider to its end users.
The end user have not even subscribed to such a wonderful learning base; even being repeatedly demonstrated about its functionality and its benefits over and over again.
And this is how MOOC has helped me in connecting the dots. Trainer MOOC is just the beginning.
Trainer MOOC: Learn or be left behind?
I empathize with the challenges which professionals faced whilst in transit from the lateral line management functions in the role of training & facilitation. The use of Facilitators Handbook as a woodchuck guide for trainers. It is still in practice with majority of Training Inc; which leads to a feeling of confusion and disorientation for individuals who are used to strict, syllabus directed, lecture courses. This is what makes participants waiting for the facilitators to spell out what is to be done, how it is to be done and when is it to be done.
Trainer MOOC is about being in a restaurant 24X7 where you have the option to choose the serving of a dish the way you like it to be. It is like breaking the myth of having Fish with Rice. I know what you'd be thinking. I will have Fish with Bread.
